RRIDMA is implementing development program for BPL & rural tribal families with their own available resources (Land, Water, Vegetation, and Livestock).

RRIDMA focuses on socio economic resource poor rural families to provide sustainable livelihood, health, awareness, clean environment, strong grass-root level organizations and better quality of life using degraded natural resources like land, water, livestock, promotion of horticultural crops with fruit plantation as a source of cash income, promotion of Organic farming and vegetation. The main thrust of the organization is to create employment opportunity in their own wastelands, thus checking migration, regenerating their degraded natural resources and offering them a sustainable way out of their poverty. This program was initiated by financial support of Tribal Area Development Department (TADD) in year 2001.

The main objectives are:

· To promote productive use of degraded lands through establishment of Wadi & Improved agricultural practices.

· To promote sustainable gainful self-employment through farming system approach.

· Improve awareness in the concerned community with regards to development through extension, training, environment & quality of life aspect.

WADI MODEL

RRIDMA is having its major working area in tribal districts of Rajasthan. These districts have its major population under SC/ST category. These people are poor and backward, needing developmental assistance on priority. They are indigent and leading a miserable existence. As employment opportunities were scarce in the tribal belt, they had to migrate for nearly half the year to neighboring towns in search of employment. RRIDMA held series of meetings with them and indicated it’s only the willingness which helps them to develop their degraded lands, if they are prepared to participate actively in various development activities. A serious of meetings was held with them to identify the best option to get better results from their waste lands. Growing fruit emerged as the best option.

Development of orchards on wastelands owned by the tribal has opened new prospects for them. This programme demanded the active involvement of the entire family, particularly women. Each family was provided technical guidance and critical inputs to convert 0.4 ha of their eroded, barren land into productive orchards of Aonla, mango and other fruit crops. Water, being a critical component, contour bunding, gullies plugging, digging of farm ponds and construction of percolation tanks were executed for conservation of soil as well as the water. Various eco-friendly practices such as use of biofertilisers, green manure, Vermi-compost and biopesticides were introduced. With fruit plants, forest plant species were also planted on bunds and borders to serve as windbreaks and as a source of green manure, herbal medicine, fodder, fuel and timber. The inter-space was used for growing cereals, pulses and vegetables for immediate income generation. The tribal named this programme as Wadi (orchard).

The major components of the Wadi programme are as follows:

· Land shaping through soil conservation and contour bunding;

· Watershed development to provide protective irrigation;

· Establishment of nursery for fruit and forestry species;

· Promotion of kitchen gardens;

· Agro forestry, fruit trees in main field; multipurpose tree species on bunds;

· Establishment of live-hedges on the boundary;

· Crop production in the interspace using improved seeds and other inputs;

· Sustainable agriculture: use of Vermi-compost, bio-fertilisers and IPM;

· Post harvest activities and marketing;

· Linkages of the families with financial institutions and Panchayat Raj Institutions.
